It was recently announced that director David Yates would be tackling a new Doctor Who movie – creating a canon separate from the storied history of the tv show. Should Whovians be celebrating? Perhaps not … because there are so many ways this could go wrong.
- A ROUGH and GRITTY reboot -I can see this going wrong now. Something that has always made Doctor Who great is that it’s not all seriousness! Even in the McCoy years, arguably the darkest years on the show, there was still a certain degree of wit and zaniness. If they try to turn this into a Batman Beginsversion of Doctor Who, much of what fans truly love about this show will be gone.
- The wrong actor in the part -There has never been a bad actor to play The Doctor. While some people might argue about that (Colin Baker did the absolute best with absolute shit!), the selection process has to be strenuous. While this might sound odd, there has to be a certain madness behind the actor’s eyes and an overall quirkiness to the persona. I nominate Robert Downey Jr. , Tim Roth, or Nathan-freaking-Fillion! If they shove Matthew McConaughey into this role, I’ll facepalm and chuck popcorn at the movie screen throughout.
- It becoming Hollywoodized – This is less of a concern since David Yates has a pretty decent track record. The last couple of Harry Potter movies were beyond awesome; but Hollywood has been known to kill things that people love when they’re made into movies. My prime examples: G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobraand the Transformers movies. Even the magic of Yates may not keep this movie from being great. Just look at Ang Lee and Hulk.

Murray Gold -This is an absolute must. Present day Doctor Who is not just Doctor Who without this man’s phenomenal compositions. Aside from the police box shaped time machine, this is the main thing they need to take from the show!
- Its own continuity - While this movie isn’t going to affect the show at all (supposedly), there are still a few things that the legions of Whovians are going to expect; and if one of this things is wrong, the masses will tend to bitch until the end of time. Do not make him half-human, do not have his last name as Who, keep the TARDIS looking like a police box, and for the love of god, please do not let Eric Roberts be involved in this project in any way, shape, or form.
Of course, these are just things that could go wrong. I’d really like to see this movie do well. If it was in continuity, I’d love to see Time War (what fan wouldn’t though, right?) or see the life of a young 1st Doctor. This is drawing comparisons to the Star Trek reboot, which I don’t think is fair. Star Trek was dead, for the most part, and was being defibulated back to life. Doctor Who is still very much alive and kicking; but that got me thinking about the whole Spock thing. Could this alternate continuity just be an alternate dimension from the show’s continuity?
One thing is for certain: Doctor Who has always been about a mad man traveling through space and time in a blue box, righting wrongs and saving the day. As long as they can adhere to that sentence, I think Whovians should be happy. Right?
